The Russell peninsula is a kiwi and weka protection zone and one of only three places in the North Island where the north island weka can be found. You can see the rare north island weka when you stay at Russell - Orongo Bay Holiday Park as we are fortunate to have a number of pairs living on the Holiday Park. You will hear the kiwi calling at night, however it is difficult to see them in the bush. Russell - Orongo Bay Holiday Park with its wetlands, native bush and coastal setting is a great venue for bird watchers to stay and sight a wide range of New Zealand birdlife, both bush and shorebird species.
